Nigeria on the verge of second pandemic wave with 617 new cases as Sanwo-0lu tests positive, El-Rufai self isolates

Chidi Samuel| Nigeria is hovering on the verge of a second wave of the highly contagious coronavirus as the number of new infections rose for the sixth day running with 617 new cases, even as Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu tested positive for the virus and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir El-Rufai went into self-isolation following exposure to infected persons.

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control in a statement via its verified Twitter handle late on Saturday night said the new infections were recorded in fifteen states and the FCT.

According to the update, Lagos state recorded the highest number of new infections for the day with 225 cases, followed by FCT-181, Kaduna-125, and Adamawa-25.

Other states with new infections include, Nasarawa-20, kano-12, Rivers-8, Edo-4, Ekiti-4, Bayelsa-3, Ogun-3, Plateau-3, Akwa Ibom-2, Delta-1, and Sokoto-1.

The health agency further noted that so far, Nigeria has 72,757 confirmed cases of the virus, with 65,850 discharges, and 1,194 deaths recorded.

-Sanwo-Olu contracts COVID-19, undergoes treatment

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has tested positive for coronavirus.

It was confirmed yesterday that the governor has been infected with the virus, which is supported by mild symptoms and fatigue typical of a mild case of COVID.

“Mr. Governor is receiving treatment and is being closely monitored at home by the very experienced State COVID-19 clinical team from IDH Yaba.

“Mr. Sanwo-Olu is doing well on treatment and rest and we are confident that he will recover quickly and clear the virus. We are seeing slightly increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases in clusters in Lagos and all residents and visitors should strictly adhere to the prescribed advisories of safe distancing, mask-wearing, good hand and respiratory hygiene and avoidance of unnecessary or large gatherings,” noted a statement by the commissioner for health, Professor Akin Abayomi.

-Again, El-Rufai goes into self-isolation

Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has again gone into self-isolation, as one of his family members and some senior Government officials close to him tested positive for Covid-19.

The governor who earlier in the year contracted the highly contagious virus made the disclosure in a short video on his official Twitter handle @GovKaduna.

The tweet and video read that, “Malam Nasir @elrufai has been notified of more positive Covid-19 test results of persons close to him, including an immediate family member and senior officials of the Kaduna State Government.
