Nigeria shuts Abuja, Lagos International airports over COVID-19

Yusuf Bello| Nigeria on Saturday announced that international flights will be restricted from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikwe International airport in Abuja.

Restrictions of international flights from the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano, Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, and the Port Harcourt International Airport in Omagwa were announced earlier on Thursday.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said on Saturday that the decision was necessary as a measure to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The restriction, the agency said in a statement signed by its Director-General, Musa Nuhu , will last for a month, and will come into effect from Monday, March 23.

The statement, however, said that emergency and essential flights are exempted from the restriction.

Meanwhile, domestic flights will continue normal operations at all airports.

Nigeria confirmed 10 new cases of the dreaded coronavirus on Saturday bringing the total number of cases in the country to 22.
