Onnoghen absent at tribunal hearing over toothache, high blood pressure

The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, failed to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, where he is facing trial on six counts of non-declaration of assets.

His lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), said Onnoghen was unable to appear in court because developed a toothache which needed to be treated urgently.

Awomolo also produced a medical report obtained by the suspended CJN from the hospital where he was said to be receiving treatment.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar (SAN), acknowledged that he had been given a photocopy of the medical report.

He noted that he would have expressed “an observation” about the medical report but for the comment of the doctor who signed it, stating that Justice Onnoghen had a high blood pressure of 410/121 and needed rest.

The tribunal chairman, Danladi Umar, after listening to both counsels and taking into consideration the medical report on the CJN adjourned the case till March 18.
