NJC members summon emergency meeting, Bars Onnohgen, acting CJN from presiding

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has summoned an emergency meeting over the suspension of Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The meeting which according to sources, was called by some NJC members in line with its rules will hold on Tuesday in Abuja by 10am.

According to a source familiar with the development, both Onnoghen, The suspended former CJN and Ibrahim Muhammad, the acting CJN, will be allowed to preside over the meeting.

The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA has also summoned its executives to an emergency meeting to discuss the suspension of the former CJN and his replacement with Ibrahim Muhammad.

The meeting will also hold in Abuja.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday suspended Onnoghen with Muhammad, citing an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) had filed a six-count charge against the CJN based on a petition written by the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI), a civil society group.

In the petition dated January 7, the group, had among other things, accused Onnoghen of false assets declaration.
