Our reporter/ Nigerians over the weekend expressed outrage over the demand of N126bn by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu while appearing before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Friday, to defend the commission’s 2025 budget proposal.
According to Yakubu, the need for additional funding is to support key areas of INEC’s work.
He listed the areas needing the funding to include the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, logistics for off-cycle elections, replacing damaged election materials like Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS), Ballot Boxes, and Voting cubicles, as well as repairing INEC offices in Local Government Areas.
He stated that 2025 is a crucial year for preparing for the 2027 General Elections and stressed the importance of receiving funds on time to ensure smooth operations.
According to him, INEC remains dedicated to strengthening the electoral process and sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
However, many Nigerians, unimpressed by INEC’s shoddy conducts of the last presidential election when its chairman Mahmood Yakubu declared candidate Bola Tinubu winner of the election in the dead of the night and asked aggrieved parties to go to court expressed outrage over the N126bn request.
“If you like give Professor Mahmood Yakubu N200 Trillion to conduct the election,he will still bungle the election blame it on glitches and ask you to go to court after he must have announced the winner by 3 or 4 am when law abiding Nigerians will be sleeping”, Chijioke PhD @Ekwulu wrote.

This man called mahmood Yakubu is still in the office and Nigerians are silent about it. What happened will repeat itself again in the 2027 election.

@Uchedec
You Mahmood Yakubu received 40 billion naira to conduct a fair election using new technology, but you turned off the taxpayer server to manipulate the election for incompetent Bola Tinubu. Now, you’re ungraciously requesting even more money, INEC chairman deserves arrest.
@eSaviour870
Inec Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, please tell us who won the 2027 presidential election so that, that money can be used for the national grid that just collapsed.
No need for any freaking elections when election results can just be written by you. Save us the drama.
@Hiikyaatoor
INEC & Mahmood YAKUBU need another 126billion Naira to organize elections with glitches and announcements at night when the children of God are sleeping.
@NigeriansBatman
There’s been no bigger insult to Nigerians than Mahmood Yakubu still sitting on the seat of the INEC Chairman.
@Dejasper4jesus
Shameless INEC
The fact they have the temerity to say this is not only shocking, but heart staggering.
Mahmood Yakubu is very wicked
He doesn’t deserve to be in that office
He sold the Destiny of Nigeria to Thieftinubu.
@IamIfeanyiOnuoha
Mahmood Yakubu the architect of electoral chaos, dares demand billions? A national disgrace; jail awaits thieves, not public funds!
@el_Victor014
I don’t know if EFCC don’t want to investigate Mahmood Yakubu the INEC Chairman.
N355B wasted for an unsuccessful, Manipulated and rigged election of 2023.
Now N126B for 2027 election..
Something has to be done and nothing is going to be done
Nigeria is doomed for life
@Plug_ambassador
The fact that Mahmood Yakubu is so incompetent at upholding the electoral Act and play his part to make sure that the will of the masses stands is enough disgrace for him. He should be ashamed facing the camera and asking for more funds from the Nigerian people!
@Levok4ever
Any fund from our commonwealth expended on INEC as constituted and led now by Mahmood Yakubu is a colossal waste of taxpayers money.
@Generalprime1
N126 billion for what exactly? why is this Mahmood Yakubu still the INEC Chairman?…hasnt it already been established that he’s as incompetent as they come?
