Patience Jonathan appeals forfeiture of N12.2b to FG

Wife of Nigeria’s former president, Patience Jonathan has appealed Monday’s forfeiture order of her N12.2billion to the Federal Government granted by a Lagos high court.

In an appeal filed at the Court of Appeal in Lagos, the former first lady is praying the court to set aside the judgment of Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

According to the appeal filed by Mike Ozekhome (SAN), the judge erred in law by ordering the final forfeiture when she had no jurisdiction to do so.

It will be recalled that Justice Olatoregun while ruling on an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) asking for the forfeiture of $8.4million (about N3.030billion) and N9.2billion found in the former first lady’s companies’ accounts, ruled that the funds were proceeds of unlawful activities.
