Two persons have been confirmed dead, three rescued and others missing after a passenger boat capsized at the Ipakan Boat Jetty, Egbin in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State..
It was gathered that the 20 passenger boat which left Badore in Ajah enroute Egbin jetty, Ijede in Ikorodu upturned at about 11pm on Saturday, shortly after it took off.
While three of the passengers were said to have swam to safety, two bodies were recovered on Sunday afternoon.
According to an eyewitness account, 16 persons including the boat driver were missing and all the passenjers were not wearing live jackets.
He said, “No one was putting on life jacket. The boat driver was not on duty, he was coming from where he had gone to repair his boat. On his way back, he saw the passengers and they begged him to take them to Egbin, Ijede.
“Emergency workers are searching for those missing. So far, Two bodies have been seen. The cause of the accident is not known yet.”
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident.
The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, while confirming the incident, said the incident occurred at about 11:00 pm.
According to him, three persons were, however, rescued and taken to hospital while the dead comprise a 40-year old woman and a yet-to-be-identified man who were found by the agency’s response team.
Rescue and recovery efforts he said are continuing for the other missing passengers by officials of LASEMA, the state’s Waterways Agency (LASWA) and the Marine Police.
