The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmoud Yakubu on Tuesday explained to the presidential election petition why the commission was unable to transmit the results of the 2019 presidential election electronically.

At the resumed sitting of the tribunal on Tuesday, lawyer to President Muhammadu Buhari, Alex Izinyon (SAN), played a video, where INEC Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu confirmed the commission could not transmit results electronically, because of inadequate communication facilities/coverage in the country and the challenge of cybersecurity.

The senior advocate of Nigeria further tendered a digital video disc (DVD) which contained the interview Yakubu granted to Channels Television detailing challenges of transmitting results electronically from across the country.

The tribunal subsequently admitted the DVD as Exhibit: P85, while the certificate of compliance, tendered with it, was admitted as Exhbit: P86.

Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are claiming that INEC used a central server for collation of results of the February 23 presidential election.

The petitioners are challenging the result of the presidential election before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), and on Monday tendered video recordings to support their claim that they won the election by virtue of some results they got from INEC server.
