We’ll be strict on oversight functions, Lawan tells Buhari

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, yesterday led  principal officers of the Senate to meet President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State for about an hour behind closed doors.

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, the senate president said they would be strict with their oversight functions to ensure full implementation of government programs and policies. 

“We are going to be very strict with our oversight, we intend to make it so, so that everybody is on his toes to perform. 

“Mr President will be leaving by the grace of God at the end of this tenure in 2023 and he has expressed his desire to leave legacies, we are with on him this all the way.

“The only way we can ensure the legacies are left by Mr. President is to insist that whoever is given a responsibility performs that responsibility. So, we are going to work with the ministers and heads of agencies to ensure that the policies of government and the legislation that we pass are fully implemented,” he said.

He added: “We have renewed our commitment to Mr. President that we are going to remain committed and focused on what we should be doing to ensure Nigerians get a better deal in the current dispensation.”

On the incoming ministers, Lawan said, “These people are of great experience, of great deal of patriotism and commitment. They have shown capacity all of them.”

The principal officers include the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi; Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Ajayi Borrofice; Deputy Whip, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Minority Whip, Senator Philip Aduda and  Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u.

Two senators from Katsina State, Bello Mandiya and Ahmad Babba Kaita, were part of the meeting. It would be recalled that the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, was in Daura on Tuesday.
