Wigwe, Access Holdings CEO, wife, son, dies in chopper crash

Herbert Wigwe, the group chief executive officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings Plc, was involved in a helicopter crash in the United States, on Friday, TheCable understands.

Wigwe, his wife and son were in the helicopter when it crashed in California near the Nevada border, as well as Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former group chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group).

Six passengers were onboard.

No survivors have been found so far.

The Eurocopter EC130 helicopter, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), crashed around 10 pm.

According to NBC report, the helicopter is registered to a Burbank-based tour company called Orbic Air.

The New York Times has also confirmed the incident but kept the identities of the passengers.

“A helicopter carrying six people crashed on Friday night near the California-Nevada border, and no survivors have been located as of Saturday morning.”

“The Federal Aviation Administration said that the Eurocopter EC130 helicopter crashed at around 10 p.m. local time near Nipton, Calif., an unincorporated community about 60 miles south of Las Vegas in eastern San Bernardino County.

It was unclear on Saturday morning where the helicopter departed from and where it was headed. Officials at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department were made aware of the downed aircraft at 10:12 p.m. local time, Mara Rodriguez, a public information officer with the department, said in a statement, adding that the scene of the crash was determined to be east of Interstate 15, near Halloran Springs Road,” New York Times said in its report.

The GCEO is also the founder of Wigwe University, and was the deputy managing director at Access Bank from 2002 to 2014, when he became the group managing director and CEO.

He served as the chairman of Access Bank (Ghana), Access Investment & Securities Limited, Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS) and presently as chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited and Unified Payments Services Limited.
