13 Unilag students sent to Kirikiri Prisons

Thirteen students of the University of Lagos have been remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons, Apapa by a Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi, Lagos until their bail applications are made.

The students were arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of unlawful invasion and disruption of activities, specifically unlawful invasion of TVC (Television Continental) in Lagos.

The accused students pled not guilty while standing trial before Chief Magistrate P.E. Nwaka who ordered that they be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till April 6.

The accused persons are: Femi Adeyeye, Toni Aina, Kodri Yaya, Asimi Oladime, Ismahim Olalekan, Segun Okesola, Abdulazeez Soneye, Idris Abogunloko, Muyiwa Olaniyi., Toheed Oladimeji, Joseph Akanni, Lukumon Olusegun, and Abiodun Agbeniyi.

CSP Effiong Asuquo, Police prosecuting counsel and Officer in Charge of Legal Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, told the court that the accused persons engaged in a riotous invasion of TVC on March 31 to protest the alleged rustication of a student.

The students are also being accused of invading the main campus of the University of Lagos, Akoka for the same reason, while disrupting activities in the university.

The prosecutor accused the students of fomenting trouble in an attempt to delay the commencement of the school’s examination due to begin on April 3.

CSP Asuquo said that the offence contravened the provisions of section 168 (1) (d), and section 2 of the Criminal Law, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
