Nine days after the collapse of a church building that killed scores in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, tragedy struck again Monday when market stalls collapsed at Urua Edet- Obo, a popular market at Ikot Akpatek in Onna LGA of the state killing two women while 17 other persons sustained various degrees of injuries.
The state Police Commissioner, Murtala Mani, confirmed the tragic incident in a telephone conversation with journalists on Monday in Uyo.
According to him, “Two women died during the tragedy caused by the collapse of an old wall that fell on them.
“Others who sustained injuries have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” Mr. Mani said.
The remains of the dead victims had been deposited at Emmanuel Hospital in Eket, a neighbouring local government area, according to an eye witness while some of the injured victims, many of them women, were responding to treatment in the hospital.
The state Government as at the time of this report has not responded to the incident.
