Ahmed Lawan elected Senate President

The Senator representing Yobe North constituency, Ahmed Lawan, on Tuesday defeated Senator Ali Ndume to emerge the president of the ninth Senate.

Senator Lawan polled 79 votes from the 107 lawmakers to beat the Senator representing Bornu South district.

Following his victory, he was immediately sworn-in by the clerk of the National Assembly.

Senator Lawan, the All Progressives Congress (APC), lawmaker, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1999, and at different times he chaired the House Committees on education and agriculture.

He was elected into the upper chamber of the National Assembly in 2007.
