A’Ibom: Democracy on trial as govt moves to quarantine delegates ahead of primaries

Chidi Tony| Ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primaries taking place on May 23rd, 2022, report monitored from Akwa Ibom State authoritatively indicates that Governor Udom Emmanuel has concluded arrangements to forcefully quarantine delegates, especially for the governorship contest to ensure that they are teleguided to vote for his choice, Pastor Umo Eno.

It was gathered that the Governor has ordered his loyalists to ensure statutory delegates to the governorship Primary across the state are lured into camps in designated locations, probably Akwa Ibom State Government lodge and some designated Hotels, from where they will be ferried in buses amidst heavily-armed security to the venue of the primary election and teleguided to do the governor’s bidding even against their wish.

It is understood that some delegates have already been assembled somewhere ahead of the primaries with the assurance that the government will take care of their welfare, feeding, and other needs amounting to billions of naira which had been earmarked to be spent till the nomination process is concluded.

We also gathered that the delegates who will wear ashebi uniforms for the event may soon have their phones and other gadgets switched off to avoid people talking them out of the arrangement.

More worrisome is the fact most of the affected delegates are married women with kids at home and their husbands to care for but may damn all odds to enter the concentration camp.

This, it was learnt, is designed to ensure that no stone is left unturned in the grand plot to award the PDP ticket to Umo Eno.

It was also learnt that some of the delegates will be tricked with the falsehood that they are being isolated on grounds of Covid-19 in a bid to convince those who may not be favorably disposed to the idea of being kept away from their families.

“They want to use Covid-19 as excuse to camp some of us whom they suspect may not want to be camped anywhere just for the sake of election,” a delegate who is privy to the plot told our reporter on grounds of anonymity.

The move, it was gathered, is part of panicky efforts by Governor Udom Emmanuel and his men over fear that the controversial ad-hoc delegates’ election reportedly held recently may not be used in the primary election.

It could be recalled that since Mr. Emmanuel picked Umo Eno as his preferred successor earlier this year, the hotelier and pastor has faced massive rejection by the people of the state, hence the desperate moves by the governor and his loyalists to rig the process and hand the party ticket to him.

Pundits however argue that the plot is one desperate act too many and queried why people’s wives should be subjected to such abduction in the name of political camping for an aspirant who may not even win an election.

Another Politician Mr. Paul Ekwere described it as laughable and complete mockery, the energy and desperation including unwanton wastage of public resources to impose an aspirant they claimed its God’s revelation as next governor stressing that God cannot be mocked by mere mortals
