Notorious bandit leader Ado Aleiro has reportedly suffered a major setback after losing his son, eight other family members and about 30 motorcycles during a recent encounter in Doma village, Katsina State.
Intelligence obtained by counter-insurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama indicated that the losses had significantly weakened the operational strength and mobility of Aleiro’s criminal network.
According to an intelligence report dated August 9, none of the estimated 30 motorcycles deployed by the syndicate during the encounter reportedly returned, with their riders said to have been neutralised.
The report also stated that Aleiro’s son and eight other members of his family were killed during the encounter.
The loss of the motorcycles is considered particularly significant because they are widely used by criminal groups operating across the North-West for rapid movement, communication, transportation of supplies and evasion of security forces.
Following the reported losses, intelligence indicated that Aleiro was, as of 3:51 p.m. on Sunday, moving alone on a motorcycle around the Sakya Dutse, Higi and Asaula areas.
His movements were reportedly being monitored by security sources seeking to determine his next destination and assess the condition of his remaining network.
Further intelligence indicated that Aleiro was also concerned about the vulnerability of a proposed location for his illegal mining activities at Gidan Buhari, under Chadiya Ward in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to the report, the bandit leader feared that the location could come under attack by Yansakai operating from Tsafe town.
The concern is believed to have heightened following the reported losses suffered by his syndicate in Katsina and the potential exposure of its remaining operational networks.
Security sources said the development could provide security agencies with an opportunity to intensify operations against the weakened syndicate and prevent surviving members from regrouping.
The reported loss of the motorcycles could also restrict the group’s ability to move quickly across difficult terrain, transport supplies and launch or escape from attacks.
The development comes amid ongoing military and security operations against bandit groups operating across Zamfara, Katsina and neighbouring states under Operation FANSAN YANMA.
Security agencies are expected to sustain surveillance of Aleiro’s movements while assessing the full extent of the losses suffered by his network.
Authorities have also been advised to strengthen coordination among troops and other security agencies in Tsafe and surrounding areas to prevent the syndicate from regrouping or establishing new operational bases.
