[Updated] Onnoghen: Senate cancels Tuesday plenary

The Senate has cancelled it’s scheduled plenary billed to hold on Tuesday  (tomorrow)

The Clerk of the Senate,  Mr. Nelson Ayewoh,  stated this in a statement signed by him on Monday evening.

Ayewoh did not give reasons for the action but explained that the federal lawmakers would now resume on February 19 earlier adjourned to last week.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed, however, that the last minute cancellation followed the decision of the red chamber to approach the Supreme Court for the interpretation of the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. justice Walter Onnoghen

The Senate is asking the apex court to determine whether President Muhammadu Buhari acted within his powers by suspending the CJN or not.

In a statement later on Monday evening, Yusuph Olaniyonu, spokesman of Senate President Bukola Saraki, said the suit made the Senate cancel the plan to reconvene.

“Following the filing of the case, the matter of the suspension of the CJN which is the main issue for which the Senate had planned to reconvene tomorrow, has become subjudiced,” he said.

“Therefore, in line with the standing rules of the Senate not to debate issues that are already pending before the court, the reconvening of the Senate tomorrow has been put off. The previous adjournment of the Senate till February 19, 2019, stays.”
