Buhari formally approves suspension Magu

Yusuf Bello| President Muhammadu Buhari has formally approved the immediate suspension of Ibrahim Magu as acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The embattled former EFCC boss was suspended effectively on Wednesday but government officials were reluctant to confirm the news.

Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, media aide to Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation, who made the disclosure in a press statement on Friday, said Buhari also named Mohammed Umar as the acting EFCC chairman pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation of Magu by a presidential panel.

According to Gwandu, Magu’s suspension is to allow for “unhindered inquiry by the Presidential Investigation Panel under the Tribunals of Inquiry Act and other relevant laws”.

Magu was arrested on Monday and taken to the presidential villa in Abuja where he is being interogated a presidential panel, headed by Ayo Salami, a retired president of the appeal court over allegations of corruption and insurbodination levelled agaist him by attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami.
