Chidi Samuel || Elder statesman and former Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo said that so far President Muhammed Buhari has performed well in office and has not disappointed him and the those that supported him.
He also said he will decide if he will support the President for a second tenure when Buhari decides to run for a second term.
Obasanjo in an interview with BBC Radio said that Buhari has done well in the fight against corruption even though many people will not be happy with him because the fight is not a popular fight.
He equally gave the president kudos for tackling the Boko Haram insurgency in the north east, an area he said, he knew Buhari will excel given his military background.
Obasanjo said it was a mistake for the military to have relaxed in the fight giving the insurgents the opportunity to regroup. The fight against the insurgents he cautioned, is a long and tortuous one.
The former President advised the authorities to tackle the root cause of the insurgency which includes poor education, non-availability of basic amenities, and bad governance.
On former President Jonathan, Obasanjo said he had no regrets over his decision not to support his re-election bid, stating he could have supported anybody but Jonathan in the 2015 election.
He said, ” you can only help a man get a job but you can’t teach him how to do it.”
Speaking on the current political crisis in Togo, Obasanjo said that that the country needs a new constitution with term limits and warned sit tight African leaders that their country will leave them if they fail to leave office.
