Buhari nominates Emefiele for second term as CBN governor

Godwin Emefiele, the governor of Nigeria’s Central bank has been nominated for a second term by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to presidency sources, the letter for the tenure renewal was signed by the President on Wednesday and has since been transmitted to the Senate.

If confirmed, Emefiele will be the first CBN governor to serve a second term in office since the country returned to civilian rule in 1999.

Emefiele was first appointed in 2014 by former president Goodluck Jonathan and was retained when Buhari came to office in 2015.

According to the CBN Act, the senate must confirm the nomination before it can take effect.

Before assuming the office of the CBN governor, Emefiele was the group managing director of Zenith Bank Plc.
