Arsenal drew the first blood of the season in the community shield match by beating Chelsea via penalty shoot out after the two team played out a 1-1 draw.
Chelsea drew the first blood in the early minutes of the second half while Arsenal’s new signing Kolasinac equalised for the Gunners from a well taken free kick by Xhaka.
The two teams went in for the mandatory penalty shoot out at the end of the ninety minutes.
Arsenal scored with all four of their spot kicks through Walcot, Chamberlain, Monreal, and Giroud while Courtois & Morata missed for Chelsea.
Many Arsenal fans will hope that the community shield victory will be a sign of good things to come for the season as 52% of teams that have won the traditional curtain-raiser have gone on to claim the league title in the same season since 1992.
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger speaking to BT Sports after the match said he wants the team to be stronger together.
“Well, I don’t know if it [Pedro] was a sending off or not but at that moment we were dominating. We had some difficult moments at the start of the second half but after that we dominated. We always looked dangerous”, the French manager said.
“Every game is a battle in the Premier League, like today. It is a dream to make the fans happy, a difficult dream but we try hard. I would like they stand behind the team as we might go through some very good periods and some not so good periods.
“We want to be united and together throughout the season.”
