Justice J. D. Peter of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria has summoned Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) to appear before the court over a statement he made recently.
Falana had compared Nigerian courts to “supermarkets where only the rich do their shopping” while he was speaking at the opening of the Enugu branch of the Nigerian Bar Association Law Week.
During the hearing of a case I at the National Industrial Court, Lagos Division, on March 28, a lawyer from Falana’s Chambers, was present in respect of one of the firm’s clients before the judge adjourned the case while asking Falana to make a physical appearance to explain if he had obtained judgment via the “judicial supermarket” as he had said recently.
Justice Peter adjourned the case until May 13, stressing that Falana must appear before the court to give account on how much he paid for the judgment which he was seeking to enforce.
