A Federal High Court in Lagos has unfrozen a bank account belonging to former First Lady Patience Jonathan.
The account, a domiciliary one at Skye Bank Plc, contained the sum of $5,842, 316.66.
The order to unfreeze Mrs. Jonathan’s account was in response to an application by a team of eight lawyers led by Mr. Adedayo Adedipe (SAN) who argued that Patience Jonathan was not a party in the suit that led to the order made by the court initially to freeze the account.
Mr. Adedipe told the court in his argument that the court had no jurisdiction whatsoever to make an order against a party, his client, that is not a party in a suit filed before the court.
Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, who presided over the application, upheld the submission and discharged the order to unfreeze Mrs. Jonathan’s account.
The EFCC had, in 2016, filed an application before the court that led to the court ordering that Mrs. Jonathan’s account be frozen on grounds of suspicion that the amount in the account were proceeds from fraud.
