Agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] on Tuesday raided the University of Uyo teaching hospital and arrested Professor Eyo Ekpe, the institution’s pioneering heart surgeon.
According to eyewitness accounts, masked operatives identified as personnel from the EFCC stormed the federal facility in a commando-style raid around 9a.m.
Professor Ekpe is a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is the Deputy CMAC of UUTH, and one of the few specialists in the South-South.
The operatives were reportedly ruthless, as Staff members who tried to intervene were beaten and threatened with firearms.
Reports suggest the assault was triggered by a dispute over a medical report for a relative of a high-ranking official. However, the EFCC has yet to issue an official statement explaining the reason for the raid itself.
The Nigeria Medical Association, Akwa Ibom branch has launched an indefinite strike and demands N1bn in damages and prosecution for those involved in the raid.
