Former defense minister, Wali acquited of laundering N950m campaign funds

By our reporter| Nigeria’s former minister of defense, Amb. Aminu Wali was on Friday discharged and acquitted by a federal high court in Kano in a case of alleged laundering of 950m campaign funds.

Wali was dragged before the court by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for receiving the said sum without passing through a financial institution which is contrary to the money laundering act of 2011.

Presiding Judge Lewis Allagoa in his ruling said the prosecuting counsels failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubts.

Counsel to Wali, Sam Olagunorisa, while responding to the judgement, said they have been vindicated.

He said, “We are able to prove that indeed the said money passed through a registered financial institution in the country.”

Counsel to EFCC, Cosmos Ogwu, on his part said the anti-graft agency will study the judgement and decide what the next step will be.

Ogwu said, “We have come to the end of the road at this level, adding that “in a litigation, you can’t say until judgement day, we shall study the judgement and see what we can do after.”
