Governors yet to decide on state police- Fayemi

Ekiti state governor and chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti state, on Friday disclosed that the 36 state governors are yet to take a stand on the issue of state police.

The Ekiti state governor who stated this at the end of a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and security chiefs at the presidential villa in Abuja, said the meeting was convened to address the security challenges in the country.

According to him, while some governors expressed support, others are, however, opposed to the idea.

He assured that te issue of state police and other issues relating to the security challenges in the country would be deliberated upon at the national economic council (NEC), which is scheduled to convene shortly.

Those who attended Friday’s meeting include, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and all the service chiefs.

Others in attendance are, Babagana Monguno, national security adviser, Ahmed Abubakar, director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Adamu, inspector general of police, and Yusuf Bichi, director general of the Department for State Service (DSS).

It will be recalled that the presidential panel on the reform of special anti-robbery squad (SARS) had recommended the establishment of state police.
