Ifeanyi Ubah attacked by gunmen in Anambra, police officers feared killed

By our reporter| Heavily armed gunmen on Sunday attacked the convoy of Ifeanyi Ubah, the senator representing Anambra south senatorial district.

According to eyewitness accounts, the convoy of the senator was ambushed at Nkwo Enugu Ukwu, Njikoka LGA of Anambra state.

“Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy came under attack in Enugwu Ukwu this evening. He was ambushed by heavily armed men who opened fire on his convoy. Some of his aides were killed, including some police officers, he said.

“The senator managed to escape as his car was riddled with bullets.

“I was driving up to that spot from the link road to the express when some people in a shop shouted at me and asked me to turn back and take another road, which I did”.

Some aides of the senator and police officers were reportedly killed in the shootout with the gunmen.

Anambra state police command spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident, said although details were still sketchy, investigations into the attack had commenced.

“The details are still sketchy. Yes, there was a shooting incident at Enugu-Ukwu involving Senator Ifeanyi Ubah this evening,” he said.

“Meanwhile, the commissioner of police, CP Echeng Echeng personally led police operatives to the scene. The situation is being monitored, further details shall be communicated.”

As at the time of filing this report, the condition of the Senator could not be ascertained, however, sources close to him said the injured lawmaker was highly agitated and upset following the near death encounter.
