Chidi Samuel| Jailed former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu on Wednesday filed an application for bail pending his appeal against his jail sentence.
The senator representing Abia North who filed the application through his counsel based his application on health grounds.
He argued that the medical facilities in the prison cannot handle his situation and also that as chief whip of the senate, the interests of his constituents would be in jeopardy if he was kept in prison.
The EFCC, however, opposed the bail on the ground that bail is for accused persons on the presumption of innocence, but that since he had been convicted, he could no longer enjoy such privilege.
Mohammed Liman, the presiding judge, adjourned till December 23, 2019, for a ruling.
Kalu was jailed by the federal high court, Lagos on December 5, 2019, jailed for 12 years over N7.56 billion fraud.
His company, Slok Nigeria Ltd, was wound up and the assets forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
