UPDATED: Akpabio elected senate president

Our reporter/ Former governor of Akwa Ibom state and ex minister of Niger Delta affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio has been elected president of the Nigerian Senate.

He was declared by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal after a keenly contested poll.

Akpabio secured 63 votes to defeat Abdulaziz Yari from Zamfara State who had 46 votes in keenly contested race.

The new Senate President defected from PDP to APC in 2018 and resigned as Senate Minority leader.

Akpabio’s political career:
2002-2006: Akwa Ibom Commissioner
2007-2015: Akwa Ibom Governor
2015-2019: Senator
2015-2018: Senate Minority Leader
2019-2022: Minister of Niger Delta Affairs
2023: Senate President.

Akpabio sworn in

Meanwhile, Akpabio was sworn in as the President of the Senate for the 10th National Assembly shortly after the voting process ended.

Voting commenced at the Red Chamber in Abuja, Nigeria at exactly 08:45am on Tuesday on a state by state basis, alphabetically.

Voting ended at exactly 09:15am.

Akpabio was sworn in at exactly 09:44am.
