LG Poll Fallout: APC Chieftain Alleges Threat To Life

Akwa Ibom local government poll have come and gone but a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Engr. Kufre Ekong Inyang has raised alarm over what he called repeated threats to his life by thugs believed to be sponsored by political enemies in his native Ibiono Ibom council area of the state.

Narrating his ordeal to newsmen in his country home yesterday, he disclosed that the most recent incident occurred over the weekend while he was returning home after an engagement in Uyo the state capital and had repeated phone calls from an unnamed good-spirited and conscientious individual, who perhaps got winds of a planned attack on him and promptly alerted him of the evil plot.

He said the anonymous caller warned him that the road to his house was not safe and for his safety, Mr. Inyang said he decided to stop at Nnung Udoe Itak Junction where he informed the police personnel and sought their assistance.

In his words, “A team of police officers from Ibiono Headquarters responded almost immediately and subsequently escorted me from Nnung Udoe Itak where I had waited to my compound in Ikot Usen, after I had narrated the story to them. And ever since then, my normal movements and businesses have been adversely affected as danger appears to be lurking everywhere”.

Engr. Ekong Inyang, further disclosed that the recent incident was one in a series of many attempts on his life and that of his family members, which he initially had taken for granted until recently when it became tensed.

“I and my wife had been advised through text messages and voice calls by unknown persons not to leave the safety of their compound on particular days or risked the unforeseen”, adding that even his closest ally and a Youth Leader in the village who lives with him, Mr. Michael Anana, has on several occasions been physically abused and warned to cut off all ties with him or face terrible consequences.

According to him, “A day came when Michael Anana was physically assaulted by hired hoodlums who are members of the village, with stern warnings that worst treatments awaits him except he does their bidding.

Although names were not mentioned, but giving insight on what may have warranted the unfortunate situation, Engr. Ekong Inyang, stated that the threats were not unconnected with his party preference and political ideology in his area which has seen droves of admirers and loyalists defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress in recent times.

He maintained that the induced wind of insecurity around him was politically motivated by all indication and carefully planned in the build-up to the just concluded Local Government elections in the local government.

He disclosed that besides the recent threats, the Ikot Usen Village has not experienced total peace in recent times because of a few prominent members of the community who always insist that things must be done their way.

He traced the root of the matter to the scenario when some selfish and self-willed politicians from the village had tried to produce or foist their anointed candidates on the village as members of the Village’s Council Executive but failed woefully.

He therefore suspected that the attacks on his life might be the outcome of sustained hatred against him by those opposed to his principles.

Engr. Kufre Inyang called on the Nigerian Police and other security agencies to investigate the allegations of threat to his life and ensure the suspects are arrested to avert bloodshed in the Ikot Usen Community.

“We must play politics with a sense of decency and tolerance for peaceful co-existence and communal growth”.

He however advised those behind the plot to desist stressing that he will not fail to take legal action if he is further pushed to the wall.
