Nigeria confirms 1,430 new cases of #COVID19 as NCDC records cases of UK variant

Chidi Samuel| Nigeria on Monday confirmed 1,430 new cases of #COVID19 with 435 community recoveries in Lagos State and 184 in Kaduna State.

The country also recorded three deaths from coronavirus related complications.

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control in a statement late on Monday night via its verified Twitter handle, said, the new infections were recorded in nineteen states and the FCT with Lagos recording 744 fresh cases, followed by Plateau-100, Oyo-77, FCT-75, Nasarawa-74, Katsina-48, Edo-42, Kano-41, and Enugu-37.

Other states with new infections include, Rivers-34, Ogun-33, Kwara-32, Niger-28, Ebonyi-27, Kaduna-26, Borno-12, Yobe-10, Ekiti-5, and Gombe-1.

According to the NCDC, Nigeria currently has 112,996 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus with 98,359 recoveries and 1,507 fatalities recorded.

-Nigeria records cases of UK COVID-19 variant

Nigeria has recorded four cases of COVID-19 B117 strain, Presidential Task Force Chairman, Boss Mustapha, and the DG of the NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, confirmed on Mondy.

The variant was first reported in the United Kingdom.

Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, spoke at the PTF briefing on Monday.

“There have been reports of cases with the B117 variant strain first reported in the UK, found in Nigeria. Three of these were travelers out of Nigeria and one in a resident”, he said.

The PTF boss who is also the secretary to the government of the federation said the country’s daily statistics as at January 24, 2020, was 121,566 out of the the1,270,523 tests conducted so far.

The number of active cases, according to him, is 22,834.

Mustapha further stated that the management of cases was gradually improving with the availability of medical oxygen.
