By our reporter| Telecommunications companies can now register Nigerians for their National Identity Numbers, NIN, the national identity management commission has said.
The director-general of the agency, Aliyu Aziz, who confirmed the development on Wednesday, said other licensed private and public institutions should commence the registration in order to address the crowds at the commission’s offices.
“We have licensed private and public sector organisations including telcos (telecommunications companies) so as to create more centres,” he said.
The Nigerian government in December last year directed all telephone lines not linked to NIN by February 9, 2021, will be disconnected.
Many Nigerians protested against the directive, arguing that enough time was not provided for the exercise in the face of the raging coronavirus pandemic.
