SGF make U-turn, to appear before senate committee

Chidi Samuel ||  Mr Babachir Lawal, The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Thursday made U-turn from his earlier position not to appear before the Senate committee probing allegation of mismanagement of funds meant for the rehabilitation of the North-East.

Lawal earlier in the week said he will not appear before the committee citing court summon as his reason but in a letter to the committee read to members on Thursday, he pleaded with the Senate to reschedule his appearance before the senate committee.

In the letter, the SGF said he would not be able to appear before the panel “primarily because of a pressing engagement of government which clashed with the date and time of the hearing.”

The reasons for Babachir lawal’s U- turn is not yet known but there are speculations that the presidency was not comfortable with his approach of resorting to the courts to stall his appearance before the senate committee a day after the Customs CG, Hameed Ali took the same route.

The Senate said a new date will be fixed for Babachir’s appearance.
