Updated: Court remands Sowore, four others over New Year’s protest

By our reporter| A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on Monday, ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, and four other activists in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of their bail applications.

Their formal bail applications would be heard on Tuesday, January 5, 2020.

The Federal Government earlier on Monday arraigned Omoyele Sowore and four others at the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja for calling for the violent overthrow of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

Sowore who was arrested by the police for leading a protest against bad governance on New Year’s Eve in Abuja, is being arraigned alongside four others on three charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and attempting to incite others.

According to the prosecution, the defendants were arrested on New Year eve with placards calling for a violent revolution against President Muhammadu Buhari.

The four pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Sowore is not a stranger when it comes to confrontation with law enforcement authorities in the country.

He was detained for over 100 days in 2019 for calling for a #RevolutionNowProtest.
