Tinubu vows not to surrender to bandits, terrorists

Nigeria will not surrender to bandits and terrorists, President Bola Tinubu has said.

Tinubu’s message was conveyed by George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), during the national inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Yomi Odunuga, special adviser on media and publicity to the SGF, Akume said Tinubu has pledged to intensify efforts to address economic challenges and strengthen security across the country.

The SGF said the president remains committed to easing the burden on citizens and ensuring that the dividends of democracy are felt more widely.

He said the administration is aware of the economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement affecting different parts of the country, adding that government is working to respond with urgency and compassion.

“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume said.

He also assured that the safe return of Nigerians held captive by criminal groups remains a national priority, stressing that security agencies are being strengthened and supported to address threats across the country.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he said.

Akume noted that 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 reflects the resilience of Nigerians and the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists, including those who lost their lives during the June 12 struggle.

With political activities ahead of the 2027 general election gradually building momentum, the SGF urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech and divisive rhetoric.

He cautioned young people against being used for thuggery, misinformation campaigns and political violence, warning them not to trade their future for short-term gain.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he said.

Akume also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media and families to promote peace, tolerance and national unity.

He also commended the armed forces and other security agencies for their role in safeguarding the country and sustaining democracy.
