Woman who attempted suicide on Third Mainland Bridge arraigned in court

The textile dealer at Balogun Market, who attempted suicide on March 24 while trying to jump off the Third Mainland Bridge and into the Lagos Lagoon, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court.

The woman, 51-year-old Taiwo Titilayo Momoh, pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted suicide before Chief Magistrate A.T. Elias.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, had accused Mrs. Momoh of contravening Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 by attempting suicide on March 24 at around 10 am before she was prevented by security operatives in the area.

Mrs. Momoh said she had been having sleepless nights due to being defrauded of N18.7 million by a Bureau-de-Change operator in 2015.

The probable sentence for the crime is a life imprisonment, according to provisions of the section allegedly violated by Mrs. Momoh.

The Chief Magistrate, however, granted a bail of N500,000 and two sureties to the accused. He also directed that Mrs. Momoh be evaluated for psychiatric wellness while he adjourned the case until June 1.
