The first half of the Champions League group stage’s fifth matchday is over. History was made, teams clinched and there were tons of goals. Here’s everything you need to know.
WHAT TO KNOW
5 teams clinched
With Tuesday’s results, Monaco and Leicester City clinched their groups, while Leverkusen, Real Madrid and Juventus all earned a spot in the round of 16. None of those are really shocking based on how thing have gone, and each team has shown fantastic form. We expected Real Madrid and Juventus to be there, while the other three look like dark horses and matchups you want to avoid in the round of 16. Those teams join the following already-clinched group of teams: Arsenal, PSG, Atletico Madrid and Bayern.
Tottenham eliminated
This was supposed to be the year Tottenham made a run. Not often in the Champions League and with plenty of talent, the Spurs looked like the favorite in their group but are now out of the UCL after losing at Monaco. For a team that has played well in the Premier League, it’s been a different story in this cup.
The Spurs lost three of their first five games, scoring just three goals. And that’s been the big problem — the inability to grab goals.
This clip of Heung-Min Son from Tuesday sums up the Spurs’ 2016 Champions League campaign.
Twenty eight goals in eight games. Of course, that was boosted greatly by the Dortmund-Legia match, which the Germans won 8-4. And with that, history was made. For the first time in the competition’s history, 12 goals were scored in one game. That surpassed the remarkable Monaco-Deportivo game from 2003.
