Dangote, Adenuga fall in latest Forbes Billionaires’ rankings; Otedola, Rabiu out

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, and Dr. Mike Adenuga, Chairman of Globacom, have fallen in the latest Forbes Billionaire’s List for 2017.

Dangote’s net worth slumped by $3.2 billion, while Adenuga saw his net worth decline by $4.2 billion in the past year.

Despite Dangote’s decline on the billionaire’s list, falling from 51st to 105th globally, he remains the richest person in Africa with a net worth of $12.2 billion.

Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of Forte Oil, and Abdulsamad Rabiu, Chief Executive Officer of BUA Group, both worth $1.8 billion and $1.1 billion respectively in 2016 did not make the 2017 list.

Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, Chairman of Famfa Oil, saw her position down to 1,315th from 1,121st in 2016, though her net worth remained constant at $1.6 billion.

Bill Gates remains the richest person in the world for the fourth consecutive year with a net worth of $86 billion, up from $75 billion in 2016.

Warren Buffet regained the second position from Amancio Ortega by gaining $14.8 billion in 2016 alone.

Jeff Bezos of Amazon saw a fortune growth of $27.6 billion, moving up from fifth in 2016 to number three in 2017 with  a total net worth of $72.8 billion.

Ortega, founder of Spanish clothing brand Zara, saw his fortune increase by $4.3 billion, though he lost his second position to Buffett, moving down to fourth position.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Founder, moved up to the fifth position after watching his fortune grow by $11.4 billion.

Mexico’s Carlos Slim fell to sixth position, the furthest he has fallen in about 12 years.

United States President Donald Trump is tied with 19 others at the 544th position, falling 220 places after losing $1 billion in 2016.

195 new billionaires made the 2017 list, which includes John Collison, a 26-year-old who also is the youngest self-made billionaire in the world.

The Forbes Billionaire’s list is calculated using stock prices, exchange rates, and other assets of the wealthiest persons around the world.
