IPOB withdraws threat to disrupt Anambra governorship election

Chidi Samuel || The Nnamdi Kanu lead separatist group, The Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) has recanted its earlier position that the Anambra governorship election scheduled for later this year will not hold.

The group agitating for an Independent State of Biafra had warned the Anambra election will not hold until a referendum is organised on Biafra.

But after a meeting with Ala Igbo Foundation on Friday, at Owerri, the Imo State Capital, IPOB withdrew its threat and agreed that the election will go ahead as scheduled as the group will no longer disrupt the exercise.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Prof Uzodinma Nwala the leader of Ala Igbo Foundation said that after their deliberation, IPOB gave the assurance that it will not disrupt the Anambra election.

Nnamdi was said to have informed the meeting that IPOB is a law abiding group that respects the words of Igbo elders.

“I came because of my respect for elders. IPOB is not a violent group. We are law-abiding citizens of the society,” he was quoted to have said.

“What we discuss here today will guide us in the issue of Anambra election. I will go and meet with the leadership of IPOB.”

Whether IPOB will abide by their commitment remains to be seen.
